Cycles sédimentaires dans le système turbiditique du Congo : nature et origine ArchiMer
Picot, Marie.
Turbidite systems are huge submarine sedimentary fans located off rivers, at the foot of the continental slope. They constitute the most distal terrigeneous deposits of a fluvial system. Their internal structure, defined as a stacking of channel-levee systems, show architectural changes through time. Forcing factors of these architectural changesare still poorly understood, and the respective role of internal (related to the own functioning of the system) or external forcing factors (climate, seal-level variations, tectonics) remains debated. To better understand the role of these controlling factors, a detailed study of the Congo system architecture was carried out. This study was conducted as part of the Reprezaï research project (Ifremer/IUEM, since...

Modern sedimentation and geochemical imprints in sediments from the NW Madagascar margin ArchiMer
Pastor, Lucie; Brandily, Christophe; Schmidt, S.; Miramontes, E.; Péron, Maela; Appere, Dennis; Chéron, Sandrine; Boissier, Audrey; Jouet, Gwenael.
The NW Madagascar continental margin receives high loads of terrigenous particulate organic matter during the wet season and especially linked to extreme events, originating from two major rivers, the Betsiboka and the Mahavavy Rivers. This particulate matter contains a high content of iron minerals from the weathering of red ferruginous/ferralitic soils of Madagascar. The presence of pockmarks, i.e. gas or fluid expulsion features on the continental slope, testifies to past/present methane migration through the sedimentary column, associated with early diagenetic processes. This study globally aims at deciphering the interactions between episodic sedimentation and geochemical processes influenced by fluids upward migration, using a sediment trap mooring...

Plio-Quaternary prograding clinoform wedges of the western Gulf of Lion continental margin (NW Mediterranean) after the Messinian Salinity Crisis ArchiMer
Lofi, Johanna; Rabineau, Marina; Gorini, Christian; Berne, Serge; Clauzon, Georges; De Clarens, Philippe; Dos Reis, Tadeu; Mountain, Gregory; Ryan, William; Steckler, Michael; Fouchet, Christine.
In contrast to the much-studied onshore and deep offshore post-Messinian sedimentary history of the Gulf of Lion, the continental shelf had been poorly explored until recently. New seismic data, acquired by ELF Oil Company on the Languedoc-Roussillon shelf (Western Mediterranean Sea), from Cap Creus in the SW to Cap d'Agde in the NE, together with data from previously drilled exploratory wells, allow us to propose a scenario for margin reconstruction following the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The seismic data display a complex pattern of prograding clinoforms and buried submarine canyons. Following the crisis that eroded the previous margin, clinoforms developed as the new Pliocene margin prograded. Three major periods characterize the evolution of the...
